Climb Kalamazoo Climbing League (CKCL)
Team competition focusing on:
- flashing and red pointing roped routes
- overall fitness for the spring climbing season
- engaging with community here at the gym
Every week, teams of 4 climbers climb and record that week’s designated CKCL routes. Teams compete against one another and our division system allows 5.8 climbers to compete against 5.12 climbers.
The goal of each team member is to try and flash or redpoint as many routes as you can to earn the most points for your team. Each team member’s score will be added together for the total team score for that week. At the end of the 8 weeks, the teams with the best cumulative scores will be awarded 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places.

How the Division system works:
Our division system is an attempt to group climbers of any gender, climbing ability, or age to be on the same team and to compete against each other.
This system rewards individual climber achievement while prioritizing fun and camaraderie. This system is fairly simple. When a competitor registers, they will designate their division based on the hardest grade they are able to consistently climb
Divisions are as follows:
-
5.6-5.8 = A (Blue)
-
5 8-5.10 = B (Yellow)
-
5.10-5.11b = C (Green)
-
5.11b-5.12+ = D (Pink)
Yes, your team members can post to different divisions.
If we feel you are in the wrong division, we may bump you to a more appropriate division, so if you're not sure where to start don’t get too stressed out about what to pick.

HOW COMPETITION WILL WORK
Being honest about your climbing/ scoring will improve your climbing and is honorable.
Links to the Google Sheet score cards will be emailed each Wednesday by noon.
Competition weeks are Wednesday to Tuesday of the next week
Redpointing every route in your division for 3 weeks in a row will result in a division change.
Climbs for each division will be a mixture of old and new routes, changed each week. Climbing the competition route - at the first go on the day you are competing (even if you have climbed it in the past) will be considered a “flash” for scoring purposes
All team members must be present to compete.
Only registered climbers can score points for your team.
Team members are responsible for keeping track of what routes they climbed and handle their own score sheet
The finish of each climb is when the climber touches the belay bar - this is never a dyno
SCORING and the Rules
All scoring is based on climbers:
-
Starting from the ground.
-
Doing sit starts where required
-
Starting at marked starting holds
-
Being honest about your climbing
For This competition we will use the following definitions:
Flash = Finishing the climb on the first attempt with no falls, from the ground
Redpoint = Finishing the climb from the ground with two or more attempts.
You can hangdog and rehearse a route- but you can only count it for scoring if you do it from the ground.
Climbing scoring will receive points for completing designated KCCL routes each week .
-
8 points for Flashing division grade
-
6 points for Redpointing division grade
-
2 points for attempting - but not finishing the climb
At least 3 of 4 members must climb on the same day at the same time to compete.
Score cards are expected to be done and turned in during the teams climbing session.
